Another ghost appeared off to the left, this one unmistakably familiar. Emma came to a halt as Officer Sandra Vales staggered in her direction, clutching at a deep gash running down her torso.

Mia stepped in beside her. “What is it, Emma? Why’d you stop?”

“It’s Officer Vales. She’s dead too.”

“Another cop from my station.” Celeste’s growl cut through the forest around them. “That makes three of my people dead because of Monique.”

“Gotta keep going.” Emma quietly muttered words of encouragement to herself, dreading what awaited them at the Place of Moonlight.

“We’re close, Emma. I know it.” Leo surprised her by speaking directly into her ear.

She startled and jumped, almost colliding with Mia.

“What is it?”

“I don’t know. I thought…” She looked back at Leo, who was at least twenty feet back.

Celeste looked at her with her eyebrows raised. “Can we get going? The sooner, the better.”

Another ghost, this one also a woman, began pacing off to the right. Emma couldn’t identify her through the trees, but the figure was lifting her arms as if to point Emma at the path ahead.

Monique had said something about the Place of Moonlight being a power center for her, Emma’s mother, and Celeste. If they were being led into a trap, she hoped Celeste really was on their side.

Having followed a slight bend around a huge holly bush, they entered a large clearing ringed by trees in a near perfect circle.

This has to be the Place of Moonlight.

Emma stumbled to a halt and looked for Celeste, wanting to gauge the woman’s reaction to seeing the space.

Several paces back from where Emma stood, Leo was propping himself up with one hand against a tree trunk. The other clutched his shin, as if he’d banged his leg against something.

Celeste had her hand on his shoulder to steady him.

Emma watched the woman closely. “Everything okay, Leo? Celeste?”

She waved a hand in Emma’s direction. “All good. He just barked his shin.”

“I’m fine.” Leo lifted his hand away from the tree trunk and jumped back. “What the…” Blood smeared across his palm and dripped from his fingers.

“It’s not yours. Come on.” Celeste led him away from the tree.

He rubbed the blood on his jeans. “It’s all over the tree.”

“It’s not just on the tree.” Celeste pointed into the clearing. “Look. We found Brittany Weir and Sandra Vales. Who’s that with them?”

Emma stepped toward the center of the circle with Mia on her heels.

Three women were lying with their heads together. Each woman’s hands were clasped to the others’ beside her, forming a ring.

The women’s chests had been sliced open, and blood trailed out and soaked into the ground, turning the grass around the bodies into spikes of red. Flies swarmed.

These women had been killed during the chaos of Salem’s fires. One of them was a cop.

But Brittany and Officer Vales were fine when we last saw them.

Sandra Vales was in the middle of the rioting, but Chief Peterson was with her. Brittany had recently been possessed again but had come out of her stupor.
